What is st. george medal?

The St. George Medal is a British decoration established in 1940 by King George VI. It is awarded to civilians or military personnel who have shown acts of great bravery, heroism or devotion to duty in the face of danger. The medal is made of silver and depicts the image of St. George, the patron saint of England, on horseback slaying the dragon. The reverse side bears the inscription "For Gallantry" and the initials of the reigning monarch. The award is considered the civilian equivalent of the Military Cross. Recipients of the St. George Medal can use the post-nominal letters "SGM".
